Getting the Right Job After Culinary School

Getting your cooking school degree is one only part of a well balanced culinary career. Before you get your degree or certificate, students need to think about what kind of job that they would like to land after getting their degree.

Right Positions

Working your way up from the cold appetizer line or fry cook is a road that many well known chefs have taken. One of the benefits of starting from positions that might not seem as glamorous is that you will develop a solid basic skill set that you can build from. Also, don’t be tempted to take positions that you are only slightly qualified for unless it is understood that the head chef will be training you. Your reputation and opportunity for learning the foundational skills needed in a culinary career set are at stake.

Right Restaurants

If you want to learn more about a variety of different positions, you should consider taking a position at a smaller restaurant where you can work several different line positions. If you want to focus on mastering something more specific, then choose a larger restaurant where you can take the time to master a skill by focusing all of your time there.

Right Head Chef

Personalities of head chefs range and making sure the fit is right for both of you will be important. You will need to know if you require more direction or prefer a more hands off approach from your superior. Just getting any job with any chef should not be your focus as it could distract from what you should be really focused on, refining your skills.

As you can see, continuing to learn and refine your culinary skills after getting your degree is a must. Choosing the right position, restaurant and head chef to learn from will make a huge difference in a well balanced culinary career.
